Our new speciality, ultra-low salt surfactant with increasing applications in global chemical industries.
Here at Libra Speciality Chemicals we look to continually produce and develop innovative surfactants to drive the industry forward. This is part of our commitment to green chemistry and increasingly sustainable solutions for the chemical industry.
The Ultra-Low Salt Betaine range can be used as the primary surfactant up to 20% inclusion in formulations compared to the industry standard SLS / SLES. This allows for formulators to use more co-surfactants within the formula and create more targeted, specific blends.
Why use Librateric Ultra-Low Salt Betaine range? – Our speciality, ultra-low salt Betaine series offers both performance benefits and flexibility to companies operating in cosmetics, cleaning and industrial sectors. As a sulphate-free surfactant, the product also offers improvements in certain features like foaming and mildness, whilst providing customers with improved natural and environmental values for their product.
Librateric CAB – LS / Cocamidropropyl Betaine
A 35% active, very low salt (<0.5%), high pH, self-preserving Cocamidopropyl Betaine manufactured from stripped, hardened and distilled coconut fatty acid.
The coconut fatty acid is manufactured from certified sustainable Non-GMO Palm Kernel Oil and available as RSPO Mass Balance (MB) grade in addition to NDPE and even palm free
Librateric DAB – LS / Laurylamidropropyl Betaine
A 35% active, very low salt (<0.5%), high pH, self-preserving Laurylamidropropyl Betaine manufactured from lauric (fatty) acid.
The lauric fatty acid is manufactured from certified sustainable Non-GMO Palm Kernel Oil and available as RSPO Mass Balance (MB) grade in addition to NDPE.

Formulation Guide
In a SLES / Betaine formulation the betaine and SLES content is influenced to a large degree by the salt from the betaine. A high salt content in the formulation limits the options of the formulator if there are looking to add additional thickness or co-surfactants. With this product range, the salt content is a 10th of the standard level, this allows a more concentrated SLES/ Betaine surfactant blend to be considered also offering better viscosity control with superb high foaming and cleaning characteristics.
Librateric CAB-LS and DAB-LS betaines can be combined with sodium lauroyl methylsethionate or sodium lauryl sarcosinate (SLS / SLES) to generate a dense creamy foam. Where standard salt betaine is used, these formulations are hazy, low viscosity and unstable.
These products are stable and efficacious over a broad pH range and both are compatible with anionic and cationic surfactants. The products low odour and low colour is also desirable for formulators and consumers.
Libra Low Salt Betaine Manufacture:
Both our standard grade and low salt betaine series are produced at our industry-leading manufacturing plant, located at our site in Manchester (UK). The development and investment at our site over recent years means we provide one of the largest betaine production capacities globally, all with our technical expertise and bespoke service.
Libra’s new technology produces betaines with ultra-low salt levels, typically 0.5% salt (but can even be 0.05%), giving formulators incredible freedom to include betaines at 10 -12%, offering the opportunity to make fantastic new products.
This combination of state-of-the-art production and our speciality vessels also reduces potential contaminants and other common by-products, allowing for our high-quality, final surfactants.
